2026 Permit Fee

As of today, December 16, all permittees should have received their annual billing from the Forest Service National billing office by either email or regular mail. Fees are normally due by Jan. 1, but due to the government shutdown and invoices not going out in November, payment is not due this year until Feb. 1. If you have not received your bill for next year's fee you should contact the national billing office.

This is our first test post using the new "groups" format so anxious to see how it works and thank you to Annelle King for working with WIX to get our platform caught up to the new WIX format.

Welcome to our group HGCCA Group! A space for us to connect and share with each other. This "Group" page is in replace of the "Forum" page. The Group page will function the same (WIX did an upgrade thing hehehe) as the old Forum page. Please reach out if there is any trouble.

Jim Montman, Cabin # 26 Co-Owner Passes Away....

ย

We lost a Canyon lover this past week and one of our own. ย Jim Montman co-owner of cabin #26 passed away after a valiant battle with pancreatic cancer (I was told). He is survived by his lovely wife, Carolyn. Canyon resident and Santa Fe author, Ellen Bradbury Reid is Jimโ€™s sister-in-law.

ย

Jim served in the military, was an avid horseman, and helped us with the rewrite of our HGCCA bylaws last year. You may not have known Jim well because his Canyon stays were usually short due to his horse duties back in Santa Fe, but Iโ€™ll bet you passed Jim and Carolyn and their friends on their deck on many summer evenings. There were always lots of smiles, โ€œhellosโ€ and laughs coming from that deck throughout the summer. RIP Jim.

Unfortunate Occurance

Sad to report that Larry and Loretta Levy's cabin was broken in to recently. Fortunately nothing of value was taken. Just a reminder that we should all watch over each other's cabins and to make sure that we all do what we can to avoid this kind of thing.

Get Bear Smart

With a bear frequenting our canyon every year, it is important for all of us to make an effort to keep the bear safe (from being euthanized by authorities), us and our cabins safe from damage. See the link below on how we can all coexist safely. I know we all know the basics but can always look through this website. Getting bear spray to have around your cabin might be a good idea just to have on hand for your walks in the canyon and in case the bear decides to visit you!

The Geology of the Pecos Wilderness

The Santa Fe New Mexican published a nice article on the geology of our area today, mostly focused on the Cave Creek Trail:

One of these days I might do my own geological study of our canyon...

USFS and BLM lands available for sale in the Senate Reconciliation Bill

I don't know what the source is for this, but it appears legitimate.

If this is accurate, the entire forest around our cabin tract except for a narrow strip is basically "for sale."

Thanks Don. I know what is supposed to happen and when generally, but this Administration has broken most of the general norms (and many rules and regulations).

After speaking with a friend at OMB this morning, and reading my three daily Hill newsletters again, and talking with you this morning, I believe Alex's original comments are spot on...they are hell bent on getting the bill to the White House for signing by July 4. This is sheer madness given the complexities of the bill and the lack of input from external stakeholders and experts.

This weekend I will send out a separate email to our membership about the importance of using the NFH's new tool, per your email this week. Annelle will send out the annual meeting agenda and party information this weekend as well. Thank you for your input, as always! We appreciate your being on top of this.
